Hiring a tree service company is like hiring any other type of contractor. You must do your research and consider your options carefully. Here are our suggestions for deciding what company to hire.
Check on the Legalities
The worst horror stories we hear from customers are of people hiring tree “specialists” who go door to door and offer to take care of your trees. These are often fly-by-night outfits who are not licensed or insured; they’re just some guys with a chainsaw and a truck. Never hire a tree service company without checking them out. Ask to see their license and insurance. Check on Angie’s List or the Better Business Bureau for reviews.
How Experienced Are They?
The best tree companies employ certified arborists. These guys are well-trained and have proven experience. But its unlikely that every guy on the crew will be an arborist, so you will want to get a feel for how long they’ve been doing this job. Tree work can be very dangerous, and you will want top climbers with a minimum of two years experience.
Tree Service Safety
This element goes hand in hand with experienced and certified crew and licensed and insured companies. Like logging, tree servicing is dangerous. The equipment is powerful and destructive, the conditions are unpredictable, and every single tree is different, requiring crews to stay alert, communicate well, and make good decisions. JL Tree has weekly safety meetings and is TCIA certified in electrical safety and jobsite safety, and is currently targeting 100% First Aid/CPR certification among its employees.
You will want to check that the company you are considering is able to provide you with the services you require. For instance, very big trees will need specialized equipment, as well trees that are hard to access. Not all companies have stump grinders, if you will need a stump removed. You should also ask what will happen to the debris after the tree crew is finished. We receive many phone calls from homeowners asking for a quote to haul away branches after some other company had been there.
You will also want to take into account how close the company is to you, as mileage and travel time will be factored into the estimate. Therefore, the closer, the better. Try to find a company with a shop within 15 miles or so of you.
Tree Service Reputation
A company with a good reputation offers you not only the job done right at a fair price, but also the peace of mind that ensures you won’t have to worry about what might happen.
